Books by Ian Scott Massie

The Romance of the Railway:
Great Northern

A book to accompany the exhibition  (which you can see HERE)  which includes the paintings and prints alongside the stories which weave alongside the tracks.

"Our journey begins at Kings Cross - a place with deep roots. The station was built in 1851 on the bank of a vanished river.  About 12,000 years ago a glacier melted leaving behind a shallow valley. The valley became the bed of the The River Fleet, now channelled underground, but its course is reflected in the buildings around Kings Cross."

A Life in Lyrics
The selected song words from 50 years of songwriting by
Ian Scott Massie
"When I was 16 something strange happened to me: I felt an urgent need to express how I felt. Where or why this need arose I have no idea, but I will always be grateful to that compulsion. I began by writing poetry - poem after poem combining my love of the words of Alfred Lord Tennyson, Dylan Thomas, T.S. Eliot, John Donne, Leonard Cohen, Gerard Manley Hopkins and, most of all, the Liverpool poets: Adrian Henri, Brian Patten and Roger McGough. These writers’ words had been surging through me and, when the dam finally burst, I couldn’t get my own words out fast enough.

I soon realised that, probably because of my experience as a musician from an early age, I wanted the feedback of an audience and, for a poet, that’s a hard thing to find. So I got hold of a cheap guitar and, by working out the chords on the piano and transferring them to the six strings, started teaching myself to play. Now I could make my poems into songs. There was no stopping me...."

NORTHERN SOUL
by Ian Scott Massie

After a personal journey through the North of England over 45 years Ian Scott Massie has painted and written in search of the personality of what he calls that "complex, careworn, mountainous, multifaceted, wave-tossed, warm-welcoming, windblown, freezing, friendly, tough spirited, tender hearted, rusty, rebellious, ruinous, green, golden, chilled-out, challenging, deep-rooted, dale-scattered, subtle, smoky, special land."
Looking at the Romantic, Industrial and Post-Industrial North this book covers the well known and hard to find places which define the Northern character.
