A Life in Lyrics
The selected song words from 50 years of songwriting by Ian Scott Massie "When I was 16 something strange happened to me: I felt an urgent need to express how I felt. Where or why this need arose I have no idea, but I will always be grateful to that compulsion. I began by writing poetry - poem after poem combining my love of the words of Alfred Lord Tennyson, Dylan Thomas, T.S. Eliot, John Donne, Leonard Cohen, Gerard Manley Hopkins and, most of all, the Liverpool poets: Adrian Henri, Brian Patten and Roger McGough. These writers’ words had been surging through me and, when the dam finally burst, I couldn’t get my own words out fast enough.
I soon realised that, probably because of my experience as a musician from an early age, I wanted the feedback of an audience and, for a poet, that’s a hard thing to find. So I got hold of a cheap guitar and, by working out the chords on the piano and transferring them to the six strings, started teaching myself to play. Now I could make my poems into songs. There was no stopping me...." Available from Masham Gallery To order by email CLICK HERE |
