A year of Yorkshire in twelve paintings

My 2027 Yorkshire Calendar has just arrived — twelve of my watercolours travelling through the year from winter skies and misty dales to the changing colours of summer and autumn.
Choosing the paintings for a calendar is always interesting. Seen together, they become a little journey through Yorkshire: familiar places, changing weather and some of the landscapes I keep returning to with my paints.
The calendar opens to A3, with plenty of room for all those things you're absolutely certain you'll remember without writing them down.

Twelve paintings, twelve places

Choosing twelve paintings for a calendar is rather like putting together a very small exhibition. I wanted the pictures to change with the year — winter light and snow giving way to spring, the richer colours of summer and finally the mists and ochres of autumn.
What connects them all is Yorkshire: not simply as scenery, but as a landscape shaped by weather, people, history and memory.

The Kilburn White Horse

The horse sits high on the edge of the North York Moors. Whenever I see it from the train travelling north, it’s the landmark that tells me I’m nearly home.

Ladyhill, Wensleydale

Ladyhill is a small glacial mound crowned by trees, but it has become much more than that. Surrounded by legends and instantly recognisable, its distinctive silhouette is one of the landmarks that makes Wensleydale feel like home.

Racehorses at Catterick

Horses have been part of the Yorkshire landscape for centuries, and racing has particularly deep roots here. Here a huddle rounds a final curve beneath a winter sun.
