A long time ago I saw a TV programme in a series called 6 English Towns about Richmond in North Yorkshire. At the time I knew Richmond a little - it was somewhere I drove though on the way to the Yorkshire Dales, but I’d never taken a close look.
The programme focused on the town’s setting, high above the waterfalls and bridges on the River Swale, with a vast Norman castle at its summit. It made me go back and look again and I’ve been looking again ever since.
The town has a terrific mix of architecture including a gorgeous Georgian theatre, a beautiful Victorian railway station and one of the most dramatically sited castles in England.
