Ian Scott Massie

I am an artist and musician who lives in Masham, North Yorkshire.
I was born in London in 1952 and grew up in Langley in Berkshire
close to where the artist Paul Nash grew up. From this, and other
points of connection, I came to see that his idea of painting the
personality of the landscape gave me a way of seeing it afresh which
has stayed with me.
I sold my first paintings while a student in Durham
where went to Nevilles Cross teacher training college
and where I also began my career as an instrumental
music teacher which still continues.
I started off with oil paints, picked up watercolours, put them down again, worked with acrylic paint for about ten years and then went back – and pretty much stayed with – watercolour. I do some work in acrylic ink and I’m just starting to do a little bit of screenprinting as well and I’m rarely without a sketchbook and a 2B pencil – its an addiction!
I love painting around themes and this has led to a long series of exhibitions on single subjects which began in 1994 with Coverdale and continues with Journeys at the Gallery in Masham
in August 2010
and Local Colour, also August 2009
and Wordsworth’s Cumbria in 2010.
Thanks for visiting my site. Here you can find a blog of my painting activities, new pictures, songs I have written and information about the art courses I teach.
I hope you enjoy your visit.
